Description
Forge Cottage is a cottage dating from the 16th century, with an older core. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with asbestos slates. The building has 1½ storeys and a three-cell layout. An internal chimney stack features a plain rebuilt red brick shaft set on a base of Tudor brick, which includes a blank recessed panel. There are two old three-light casement windows, each with a single horizontal bar, along with one single-light window. The entrance is through a plank door located within an open rustic timber porch, and there is another plain 20th-century door to the left. A single-storey lean-to is attached to the right gable end. The left side of the cottage has been raised; the gable end shows a lower wallplate, and the outline of an earlier roof is visible in the pargetting. Inside, most of the framing is covered, but the positions of substantial timbers can be seen beneath the wallpaper. There is no chimney-bay, and an upper tie-beam has been cut through for access. The end bay on the right has rough exposed timbering and is a later addition, with a change of floor levels noted in the room above.
