Description

ONEHOUSE LOWER ROAD TM 05 NW

2/147 Granary, 50m north-east of Onehouse Hall 24.6.86

GV II

Granary, mid C17; the ground storey may have originated as stabling, being partly converted to house a mill in C19 (machinery removed in C20). 2 storeys. 4½ bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Plaintiled roof. Good complete oak framing: primary-braced close studding; good 2-tier butt purlin roof, the upper tier windbraced. Windows with square mullions, and provision for sliding shutters (of which some remain at ground storey); all are glazed, probably since C19. At the narrow centre bay is an original staircase of medieval form with heavy triangular blocks and inclined bearers. The first floor has heavy main beams, and oak joists set on-edge. If, as appears, the building was designed as a granary, the quality and completeness of the structure is unusually high.
