Description
Wood Cottage is a 17th-century house located in Wattisfield. It features a plastered and colourwashed timber frame, with a brick wall at the rear gable and a pantile roof that has brick stacks at the central ridge and rear gable end. The building has a main range with a cross wing to the left and is single storey with an attic. The façade includes a four-window arrangement of single and two-light casements, along with a lean-to porch situated in the re-entrant angle between the main range and the cross wing. The cross wing gable has a pair of single-light casements, and the main range has a two-light dormer. The left end features a central door flanked by a two-light mullion and transom window, with a Lincolnshire dormer above to the left. The right end has a four-light casement with a three-light casement above it. The rear side has a two-light casement on each floor of the gable end, as well as an outshut and a lean-to conservatory.
Inside, much of the tall panel framing is visible, with massive wall posts that support bridging beams featuring stepped stops. The main range has back-to-back open fireplaces with hoods and bressumers, and a longitudinal bridging beam at collar level in the main room above. The cross wing, which has been subdivided on the first floor, originally contained two sizeable rooms on both floors and may have been constructed slightly later than the main range. The stack on the rear gable wall has open fireplaces on both floors, with the first-floor fireplace being smaller and having cupboards on either side. The stairs are from the 20th century. The roof is only partially visible in the main range, showing original rafters that were once coupled and now have a ridge piece. This small farmhouse has undergone some alterations but retains many original features from its period.
