Description
The cartlodge, located 40 meters south-west of Whitefield House, dates from the mid-17th century and features early 19th-century alterations. It is a two-lane draw-through type, three bays deep, constructed with a timber frame and pebbledash, with some areas of 17th and 18th-century beaded weatherboarding. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and the rear gable has a 19th-century spike finial on the bargeboards. The front is open at the ground storey, supported by a central post, and features strongly-curved arch-braces at the rear gable, which also has large 19th-century boarded doors. A louvred granary window is present in the front gable. The principal posts in the side walls are adorned with prominent reverse-curved arch windbraces, which have an archaic appearance for the 17th century, and there is good oak studding. Knee-braced beams were inserted in the late 18th or early 19th century to support the 17th-century granary floor. The roof has clasped purlins and is ceiled, possibly having been renewed in the 19th century.
