Description
Whitefield House is a late 17th-century farmhouse that stands two storeys tall with attics and features four windows. It has a three-cell lobby-entrance plan and is constructed with a timber frame and pebble-dash exterior, topped with plaintiled roofs. The building includes an axial chimney, with its shaft rebuilt in 19th-century red brick. The windows are early 17th-century three-light casements with transoms, and there is a six-panelled door at the lobby-entrance, where the upper pair of panels is glazed. At the rear, there is an original one-and-a-half storey service wing.
Inside, the house showcases complete 17th-century oak framing that is extensively exposed, featuring primary-braced studding and on-edge floor joists. The roof has a two-tier butt purlin structure, incorporating many reused components from another roof of similar design. The hall contains a wide lintelled open fireplace, along with some original patterned plasterwork and a blocked original window in the rear wall. Alterations to the rear were in progress at the time of the last survey.
