Description

Lyon House, formerly the Red Lion Inn, is a house dating from the early 17th century that was raised, extended, and altered in the mid-19th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered and roughcast, topped by a hipped black glazed pantiled roof. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a three-cell early range on the left and a 19th-century front range. It stands two storeys high with attics. The roughcast facade includes a central entrance with a half-glazed, half-panelled door, framed by a reeded architrave and a flat hood. There are three-light small pane casements with timber and metal moulded frames on both the ground and first floors, along with hoodboards above the ground floor windows. The eaves are boxed, and there is an internal axial stack at the right end.

Attached to the right gable end is a single-storey 19th-century outbuilding featuring a similar three-light casement. The left return of the earlier bays has similar casements, along with a small 12-pane sash window on the ground floor at the front. An entrance between the centre and front bays has a 19th-century six-panelled door. There is a rebuilt cross axial ridge stack towards the rear and an added ridge stack towards the front. At the rear, there is a weatherboarded one-storey outbuilding and a lean-to outshut from the early range. Inside, the house features stop-chamfered axial binding beams, a chamfered mid-rail, and a two-light diamond mullioned window opening. The first-floor arched braces to the tie beams have been removed, and the frame is largely concealed.
