Description
This is a barn located 60 meters south-west of New Bells Farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century with some alterations made in the 18th century. The barn has eight bays, with the two easternmost bays likely added in the 18th century. It is constructed from timber framing and is weatherboarded, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The two bays at the west end still feature the original steeply-pitched and hipped roof structure, with remnants of thatch covering, while the rest of the barn was rebuilt at a lower pitch in the 20th century. There is an 18th-century gabled porch on the north side, three bays from the west. The barn showcases good quality 16th-century close-studding and has a clasped purlin roof with some windbracing. The tiebeams have generally lost their bracing, and some were repositioned or replaced in the 18th and 19th centuries. The two eastern bays have a loft above and were likely added for stabling before being integrated with the barn.
