Description
The outbuilding located 15 meters south west of Athelington Hall is a former cart lodge or stable dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed and primarily weatherboarded, with the east gable end plastered. The building features a pantiled roof and consists of one storey and a loft, arranged in three bays. On the south side, there are two pairs of large boarded doors and one mid-20th century metal garage door. The structure has undergone significant rebuilding using re-used materials from the 16th and 17th centuries. One notable re-used beam is intricately carved with scrolly foliage emerging from the mouths of two central dolphins, whose tails are intertwined; this may have originally been a tie beam from the adjacent house. The upper floor was added in the 19th century. The early 17th century roof remains largely intact, featuring two rows of butt purlins, two-way cranked wind braces, and heavy collars, with one collar partly cut away.
