Description
Hill Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the later 16th and 17th centuries, with later 20th-century additions at the rear. It is constructed with timber framing and plaster, with the left gable end of colourwashed brick. The roof is pantiled. The house originally comprised two cells, arranged as a lobby entry type, although their original origins may have differed. It has two storeys and an attic. The front has two windows, which are mid-20th century casements without glazing bars and with cambered heads to the lights. A gabled porch once stood centrally, but the doorway has been replaced with a window. An internal stack with a truncated, rendered shaft is visible. The right-hand cell appears to be the earlier of the two. On the ground floor, one room retains heavy, chamfered joists and an open fireplace with a curved back. Above, the chamber features good, intact studding with reverse-curved braces, along with evidence of original diamond-mullioned windows – one of which is intact. Cranked braces support two tie beams, and the roof is a queen-post roof. The left-hand cell incorporates numerous reused timbers and a roof with clasped purlins. A late 17th-century secondary window, featuring a square mullion and diamond glazing bars, is located near the stack. A ground floor fireplace has been infilled with a 19th-century copper range. The house also contains a newel staircase.
