Description
Veldon Cottage is a house dating from the early 16th century, with extensions from the 17th century and a re-roofing in the 20th century. It features a rendered timber frame and a gabled pantile roof with a brick ridge stack. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window range, following a three-cell plan. The small-paned casement windows are made of stained timber and were inserted around 1987. There is a gabled porch where the original cross-entry was located, featuring a 20th-century reproduction plank door. A lean-to addition on the north gable end is rendered and has a slated roof, with a 20th-century boarded door. Additional small lean-to structures can be found at the rear.
Inside, the original house had a two-cell, end-chimney plan with substantial, widely spaced studding and reverse-curved braces that are halved against the inside faces of the wallplates. There is evidence of several diamond-mullioned windows, including one with six lights in the hall. Many of the first-floor timbers still show remnants of red ochre decoration. The current stack replaces an original timber chimney located within a bay that is only 0.6 meters wide at the north end. The cross-partition at the lower end of the hall features two intact service doorways with four-centre arches, while there is no corresponding partition on the first floor. The incomplete original entrance doorway has a heavy two-centred arch. The hall ceiling includes a chamfered main beam and plain joists set flat. The service end has joists of varied quality and a solid-tread stair, which may be original. There is a one-bay parlour addition to the north of the stack, showcasing exposed first-floor studding, a ground floor ceiling with a chamfered axial beam, and somewhat irregular plain joists, also set flat. Veldon Cottage is recognized as an important example of a small early 16th-century dwelling, complete with service doors and other notable features.
