Description

The Wooden House is a Grade II listed shop located on Low Street in Hoxne. It was built in the early 19th century and underwent alterations in the early 20th century. This building is an unusual example of a freestanding, purpose-built wooden shop, which has long been used as a butcher's premises and may have been specifically designed for this function.

The structure is timber framed and was originally covered with weatherboarding, topped by a slated roof, and is a single storey. The front features three-quarter engaged columns at the corners, with a cornice and a pedimented gable. Until the early 20th century, the front was open, with a low wall and iron railings between the columns. Currently, the facade is boarded in panels. On either side of the entrance are square-leaded oval windows with tinted glass, and circular panels of painted glass that depict a bull's head on the left and a ram's head on the right.

The central shop window, which has 18 panes, is a mid-20th century addition that replaced an open counter with removable shutters. The right side wall includes an early 20th century door with two longitudinal glazed panels and a moulded panel below. The upper part of this wall has a continuous mullioned opening with a horizontal grill of small metal bars, likely original. On the left side wall, there is an early 20th century wooden slatted ventilation opening.
