Description

Linden Cottage and Boxtree Cottage are two dwellings that were originally a single house, dating from the mid to late 16th century. They were altered in the early 19th century and partially rebuilt in the mid 20th century. The structure features a timber frame that is plastered, with some parts rebuilt using Fletton brick. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with pantiles and corrugated sheets.

The building has a long range of four cells, with the probable service end on the left rebuilt, and an extra cell beyond the probable parlour on the right. It is two storeys high. Linden Cottage, on the right, has a raised six-panelled door with a 19th-century pedimental doorcase, 20th-century two-light casements, and panelled pargetting. Boxtree Cottage, on the left, features a fielded four-panelled architraved door in a probable cross entry position, two-light glazing bar casements, early panelled pargetting, and 20th-century brickwork to the left with an internal stack. The original central axial ridge stack is located between the hall and parlour. The right gable end has a one-bay, one-storey pantiled addition. At the rear, there is a first-floor five-light diamond mullioned window that is exposed.

Inside Linden Cottage, there is close studding with a mid-rail, a stop-chamfered fireplace bressumer, and a cross axial binding beam. The openings for the five-light diamond mullioned windows are present, along with jowled storey posts and posts to cambered tie beams with arched braces, most of which have been removed. The queen post roof over all but the rebuilt bay has jowled posts with cranked arched braces to the plates and purlins. The interior of Boxtree Cottage has not been inspected.
