Description

Angel House is an early 18th-century house with a shop, originally a public house, located on The Street in BotESDALE. The building has been altered in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and mostly plastered, with some colourwashed brick to the rear. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The house has a layout in the shape of an 'L', encompassing four bays and service/stair bays to the rear. It is two storeys high. Steps lead to the central entrance, which has a glazed door with an architrave and cornice. The windows are mainly opening cross casements with glazing bars. A blocked cellar window is present. The building has boxed eaves. An internal axial ridge stack is on the right-hand side and the roof is hipped to the left, with a cross axial stack. To the rear left is a slightly lower service bay with an outer brick casing and two-light casements, along with an internal end stack. A narrow stair bay is centrally located to the rear. Inside, there is an early 19th-century lugged fireplace surround, stop-chamfered cross axial binding beams to the rear, and a 19th-century open-well staircase. The building was formerly known as the Angel Inn.
