Description
The Bacton War Memorial stands within the churchyard of St Mary's Church, near the footpath from Church Road. This memorial, erected in memory of those lost in both World Wars, is constructed from Aberdeen granite and stands 2.3 metres tall. It features a blind wheel-head cross, decorated with a carved relief wreath, rising from a tapering shaft set on a tapered, square plinth. The plinth sits upon a two-stepped, rough-hewn, square base. An inscription on the face of the cross reads “THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR / EVERMORE”. Below this, on the front face of the plinth, is the inscription "IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF BACTON / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918 / HONOUR TO THE IMMORTAL DEAD.” The names of seventeen individuals who died in the First World War are listed on the side faces of the plinth. The years 1939-1945 are inscribed on the front of the cross shaft, accompanied by the notation "(8 NAMES)". All inscriptions are incised and painted black.
