Description
Church Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the mid 16th century and significant remodelling undertaken in 1986 and 1987. The building features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan, which was converted to a lobby entrance in the late 16th or early 17th century. It stands two storeys high and is timber-framed, although all infill, plaster, and thatched roofing were removed at the time of the survey.
The structure is notable for its surviving timber-framing despite the loss of other features. The original building includes a two-bay hall and twin service rooms, with a chamber above; these service rooms were united in the 17th century. The timber framing displays good studding, with both diamond and oblong mullioned windows, and reverse arched windbraces. There is an arched cross-entry doorway, along with evidence for a second doorway. The service end has lodged unchamfered ceiling joists, while the hall features chamfered joists.
A small parlour block was added to the north end in the mid 16th century, showcasing higher quality framing. This section includes very good arch windbraced close-studding and an underbuilt jetty at the north end. There is a blocked arched doorway in the east external wall of the parlour, and evidence of various windows, including an oriel at the north end and a small two-light window facing the church. A moulded and cambered early 16th-century fireplace lintel has been reused in the rebuilt chimney. Both phases of the building feature complete hipped coupled rafter roofs.
