Description
South View is a house, now divided into two dwellings, dating from the mid to late 16th century, with an extension added in the mid 17th century. It features a timber frame with roughcast and a thatched roof. Originally, the building comprised two cells, with a parlour added to the right. It stands two storeys high with an attic over the parlour. The entrance is located in the cross passage at the centre of the original building, accessed through a boarded door in an open gabled porch. There is a second entrance into the parlour on the right side, and the windows are fitted with two and three-light glazing bar casements. The eaves step up slightly to the later addition, and the originally external stack has been repositioned to an axial location on the ridge of the parlour, featuring two conjoined diagonally set shafts with a rebuilt cap. The roof is half hipped at the left end, revealing exposed plates. The right end attic has a two-light casement, along with exposed plates and purlins. At the rear right, there is a lean-to outshut made of clay lump and covered with pantiles.
Inside, the hall contains a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam and run-out chamfered joists, with arched bracing in the service end wall. The first floor features central opposed base cruck blades supporting a raised stop-chamfered tie beam, above which are jowled queen posts, with the roof being ceiled above. The parlour includes a double bar stop-chamfered axial binding beam and a concealed frame, while the first floor was not inspected.
