Description
Plough Cottage is a house, which was later divided into two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th century, with parts rebuilt in the early to mid 17th century, and has been altered in the 20th century. The structure is timber framed and roughcast, topped with a steeply pitched pantiled roof. It features a three-cell cross entry plan, with a rebuilt parlour bay. The cottage is one storey and has an attic. The original entrance, located to the right of the centre, is blocked. The windows include 20th-century casements and dormers, with a straight joint to the left leading to the parlour. There is an axial ridge stack to the left of centre between the hall and parlour, with a rebuilt cap. The right end has three and four-light glazing bar casements, while the left end has a 20th-century outshut with an entrance. At the rear, there are two early small casements on the first floor and a 20th-century addition to the rear left.
Inside, the hall features a four-centred arched door head for the original cross entrance, close studding, and a stop-chamfered cross axial binding beam on storey posts. The joists are also stop-chamfered, and there is a stop-chamfered axial binding beam in the service end and parlour. The stairs are located behind the stack, and the interior includes arched bracing in the walling, cambered tie beams, and a roof with lower butt purlins and upper clasped purlins.
