Description

Briarways is a house that was later divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid-16th century or earlier, with extensions and alterations made in the late 16th or early 17th century, and further changes in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with some areas covered in 20th-century brick. It has a steeply pitched roof covered with machine-made pantiles. Originally, it was likely designed as an open hall with a storeyed lower bay, and a parlour and stack were added to the right.

The house is one storey with an attic and has cross and lobby entrances, with half-glazed doors set in open gabled porches that have trellises. The windows include 1 and 2-light glazing bar casements. There are two 2-light gabled dormers with bargeboards serving the hall and parlour chambers. A ridge stack with a rebuilt cap is positioned between the hall and parlour. The right gable end displays exposed plates and purlins, while the left end features an added external stack with 20th-century brick casing. The rear has 20th-century brickwork and includes a single-storey outbuilding with a pantiled roof located at the rear right.

Inside, the hall contains a chamfered cross axial binding beam and close studding, but the parlour and first floor have not been inspected.
