Description

The Thatches is a house, which has been divided into three dwellings, dating from the early to mid 16th century. It underwent modifications in the early 17th century when a stack was inserted, and it was floored and extended, with further alterations in the 19th century. The building features a timber frame, is plastered with some brick casing, and has thatched roofs. Originally, it was likely a small open hall with two bays, accompanied by a larger and wider two-bay, two-storey parlour addition on the right, and a one-bay service end added to the left. Currently, the entire structure is two storeys tall.

The parlour bays on the right have a brick and flint plinth, with steps leading up to a central entrance that features a gabled hood. Flanking this entrance are six and twelve light metal frame casements, some of which have leaded lights. On the far left, there are steps leading up to a boarded door. The ridge stacks between the parlour and hall bays, as well as between the hall and the added service bay, have been rebuilt. The return and rear of the parlour bays are cased in 19th-century brick and feature a gable end external stack. At the rear, there are two entrances, additional metal frame casements, and a clay lump outshut.

Inside, the hall bays include an arched brace from a jowled post to a cambered tie beam, along with a stop-chamfered axial binding beam. The parlour bays contain a cross axial binding beam with roll-moulded joists.
