Description
Homestead is a house with origins in the 16th century, largely rebuilt in 1667, as indicated by the date and initials 'SFA' in the pediment. It has been altered in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered and has a thatched roof. It follows a two-cell lobby entry plan and is one storey high with an attic. The central entrance is located in a 20th-century gabled porch, which includes a six-panelled door and a reset dentilled pediment adorned with rustic foliate ornament and a roundel displaying the date and initials. On either side of the entrance are three-light glazing bar casements with hoodboards, and there is a single light window to the right or service end. The house has two two-light dormers that feature attractive 17th-century ornamentation in oversailing gabled heads, along with dentilled stop-chamfered beams that have pierced pendant drops. A central axial ridge stack is present, and the gable ends reveal exposed plates and purlins. There is a 20th-century addition at the rear right that includes an entrance on the return.
Inside, the parlour to the left retains some 16th-century studding and straight arched braces in the walling, along with 17th-century bar stop-chamfered binding beams and a fireplace bressumer. The hall features stop-chamfered binding beams and 16th-century wallplates with edge halved scarf joints, while the roof is concealed.
