Description

Sandpits Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with additions from the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof featuring a decorated ridge. The building has 1½ storeys and follows a basic 2-cell lobby-entrance plan, which has been extended at both ends.

Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The exterior includes two dormers with plain bargeboards, spike finials, and 2-light plain casement windows. The ground floor features three 2-light windows and one double 2-light window, all fitted with plain mid-20th century casements. The entrance is through a half-glazed semi-circular porch with a thatched roof that slopes into the main roof.

The interior reveals plain framing, with studding and no middle rail. To the right of the stack, the main beam has a small chamfer and scroll stops with a groove, while the joists are set on edge. There is a timber lintel above the open fireplace, adorned with scroll-stops and a double groove. An original 3-light window in the former end wall, featuring small square mullions and diamond-shaped wooden glazing bars, has been slightly repositioned to allow access to the added end bay, which includes primary braces and bisected studs. To the left of the stack, there is a similar ceiling and a plain lintel above another open fireplace.

A 19th-century lean-to extends along part of the rear, and a room was added around 1970. Adjacent to the left gable end, there is a range of single-storey outbuildings constructed from red brick and flint, which have been partially converted into living accommodation.
