Description
Fengate Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early to mid 16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century and around 1970. Originally built as a late form of open-hall house, it was extended to the south in the 17th century and to the north in the 20th century. The building has one storey and attics, featuring a timber-framed and plastered structure. The roof is pantiled, having been thatched until the 20th century, and includes five gabled casement dormers, some from the 19th century and some from the 20th century.
An early 17th-century chimney made of red brick has twin flattened hexagonal flues. The windows are small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is a 20th-century hipped pantiled porch at the lobby entrance, which has a two-panelled door. To the left of the chimney is a two-bay cell that was formerly an open hall; the head of a window is located just above an inserted 17th-century floor structure that features bar-stopped chamfered main beams, with some joists chamfered and others not. To the right of the chimney is a two-bay 16th-century room with large unchamfered floor joists and close-studding, along with blocked diamond mullioned windows at the first storey. The chimney and upper floor were inserted in the 17th century, along with an additional bay added at the south end. The farmhouse is included in the listing despite major repairs around 1970, as it exemplifies a small open-hall house that has been progressively extended over a long period.
