Description
This barn, located 40 metres north-west of Choppins Hill House, dates back to the 14th century, with significant alterations primarily from the early 19th century. It features five bays and two aisles, constructed from timber framing and covered with weatherboarding. The roof is made of Roman pantiles. At the centre bay, there are pairs of boarded barn doors. The most complete architectural features are found in the south-east arcade and the north-east gable. Each open truss includes square-sectioned tie-beam braces and passing-braces, which rise from the aisles and are tenoned into the underside of the main tie-beam. The closed truss is similar but has widely-spaced studwork. The surviving arcade-braces exhibit a slight reversed (convex) curvature. An original arcade-plate scarf joint is splayed within sallied and under squinted butts. The roof was renewed in the 19th century and was likely originally of coupled-rafter form. The north-west aisle contains some 16th and 17th-century framing, but much of the barn was remodeled in the 19th century. This structure is a rare example of a medieval aisled barn, particularly in East Suffolk, and is of further interest as it is nearly contemporary with its associated farmhouse.
