Description
This barn, located 130 metres southeast of Foxes Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century or around 1600. It has three bays and is constructed with a timber frame that is weather-boarded, while the north gable is made of red brick from the mid-19th century. The barn has a pantiled roof, which was thatched until the 19th century. An 18th-century porch has been added to the east face of the central bay, featuring a pair of 20th-century boarded doors. On the west wall, there is a set of four doors from the 19th or 20th century. The timber frame is largely intact, showcasing full-height studwork with reversed arch windbracing. The roof has side purlins, with the lower tiers butted and the upper tier featuring reversed windbraces, clasped by reduced principals and collars. The open trusses have arch braces that have been replaced by 19th-century knees. Historically, the barn extended northwards by at least one additional bay until the 19th century, as four-bay barns in mid-Suffolk typically included stabling in the fourth bay. Foxes Farmhouse itself is not listed.
