Description
Broken Hill Farm is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century. It features a two-cell lobby-entrance plan and stands two storeys high with attics. The structure is primarily timber-framed, mostly encased in mid 19th century red brick, with some plastered walling at the rear. The roof is pantiled, having originally been thatched, and there is an axial 17th century chimney made of red brick. The mid 19th century sash windows have flat arches of gauged brick and border panes. At the lobby-entrance, there is a mid 19th century porch with a crow-stepped gabled pantiled roof, a hood-moulded doorway, and a panelled door featuring border-pane glazing. Some original mid 17th century framing is visible, including jewelled chamfer stops on the main beams and a set of reused mid 16th century floor joists with broad chamfers. The roof has side purlins that are butted, reduced, and staggered. There is a lower rear wing, likely a dairy from the 18th century, and a late 19th century two-storey extension on the right.
