Description

Moat Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse dating from circa 1600. It has two storeys and attics, constructed around a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The exterior is timber-framed and plastered, with 20th-century herringbone pargeting in panels. The gable tie-beams overhang at both ends. The pantiled roof incorporates a substantial original axial chimney constructed of red brick, featuring three flues of flattened hexagonal form, each with a moulded base. The plinth includes a plastered, diamond-shaped recess that may once have displayed the date of construction. Most windows are mid-20th century casements, though a few first-floor windows date to the 19th century. A half-glazed door is located at the lobby entrance. Inside, an ovolo-moulded first-floor beam is visible in the parlour, and the attic features chamfered floor joists laid flat. The roof is of a 2-tier butt-purlin design, with the upper tier wind-braced. The roof over the hall and service cells was rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The farmhouse is associated with a partial mediaeval moat.
