Description
A row of three estate workers’ cottages, dating to the late 16th/early 17th century, early 19th century, and late 19th century respectively. The cottages are constructed from different materials: the left-hand cottage (number 282) is timber-framed with a colourwashed render; the central cottage (number 283) is of flint with brick dressings; and the right-hand cottage (number 284) is of red Flemish bond brick. The thatched roofing of the two left-hand cottages has been replaced with slate on the right-hand cottage. All three cottages are of 1 1/2 storeys.
The frontages reflect the differing dates of construction. The earliest cottage (282) has a doorway at the left of centre, surrounded by two 2-light 19th-century casement windows. A single-light window sits below the eaves on the right, and a 2-light eyebrow dormer is on the left. The central cottage (283) has a near-central doorway flanked by brick quoins and voussoirs, with 2-light eyebrow dormers on either side of the first floor. The right-hand cottage (284) displays a doorway on the right and a 2-light cambered-headed casement to the left. A 2-flue axial stack sits on the ridge of the thatched cottage, with a stack at the left-hand gable end. The right-hand gable end of number 284 has 2-light ground and first-floor casements, while the left-hand gable end is mostly blank, with a battered chimney stack on the right and a lean-to outshut further to the right.
