Description

Tithe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-14th century, with alterations and additions from the 17th century. It has a T-shaped plan and is constructed with a timber frame that is roughcast-rendered, topped with a roof of glazed black pantiles. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The south wing includes a range of two 19th-century windows and a 19th-century gabled porch, which has a six-panelled bolection-moulded door and a semi-circular fanlight with ornamental glazing bars. Above the porch, there is a square chimney stack located at the junction of the two ranges. The north wing has a lean-to dairy addition at its gable end. Inside the north wing, there are remnants of a raised-aisle hall, although the aisles have been removed, and the roof and lower bay of the hall were replaced in the 17th century. Visible features include parts of two octagonal queen-posts that are relatively short, with moulded bases and caps. The queen-post at the rear retains its original arched brace to the collar.

The south range, which is a former solar cross-wing contemporary with the hall range, consists of three bays and has a one-bay addition from the 17th century at the front (west). The chimney stack is located in the centre bay. The ground floor shows heavy short arched braces to one tie beam and evidence of similar bracing on the bridging beams. The roof is intact, featuring two slender octagonal crown posts with moulded bases and caps, along with heavy four-way bracing. The original front gable displays evidence of multiple arched wind-bracing. There is a newel staircase in the south wing, which has a 19th-century arched entrance to the lower flight.

Although much of the structure is concealed, Tithe Farmhouse is an important example of 14th-century work and is contemporary with the nearby Church Farm stable. The farmstead also includes the remains of a 14th-century barn, which is not of listable quality, as well as remnants of a medieval moat.
