Description
Mill House is a house dating from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century, early 19th century, and in 1984. It is a two-cell open-hall house that stands two storeys tall. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring plaintiled roofs and red brick chimneys at the rear and sides. The house has 19th-century casements and sashes, some of which have small panes, along with a canted one-storey bay shop window on the left. The entrance doorway, from the early 19th century, has a six-panelled door with an architrave and a simple pediment supported by brackets. This building is a rare example of a single-bay open hall with a cross-passage located within the service end on the left. A spear-beam spans the hall to support the upper floor over the cross-passage, originally supported by arch-braces that have since been removed. The roof features collar purlins with smoke-blackening, which are now enclosed by the 19th-century roof built over it. There is also evidence of twin arched doorways leading into the service rooms. In the 17th century, an upper floor and a rear chimney were added, along with a two-storey wing at the back.
