Description
Grove House, also known as Little Grove, is a Grade II listed building located on Papermill Lane in Bramford. Originally constructed in the early 19th century for Edward Packard, it was once a single house but has since been divided into three separate residences. The building features a late 19th-century extension at both the north and south ends, the latter of which includes a terracotta date plaque from 1889.
The original house is three stories tall with three windows, and it has a central entrance bay that is slightly set forward. It is built of red brick and has a plain band at the second floor, along with a pediment above the entrance bay that is adorned with a modillioned cornice. The eaves are highlighted by a deep moulded cornice, and the roof is hipped and slated. The sash windows on the ground and first floors have segmental heads made of gauged brick and feature tripartite small-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are smaller and have flat arches.
The entrance is accentuated by a one-story flat-roofed porch that has corner pilasters and a modillioned cornice, leading to a six-panelled door with glazed sidelights. Inside, there are a pair of two-panelled inner entrance doors, with the upper panels being glazed, and an elliptical fanlight that showcases delicate radiating glazing bars. The three-story extension to the north includes a semicircular flat-roof bay window, which is characterized by heavy mullions and transoms.
