Description

Numbers 74, 76, and 78, and a section of Number 1 Raven’s Lane which forms part of Number 78, comprise three houses initially built as a single three-room dwelling in the early to mid 16th century. The houses are two storeys high. They are timber-framed, though the front elevation of Numbers 76 and 78 was rebuilt in the 18th century using red brick, now painted, with a decorative band at first floor level. The original design featured jetties along the street frontage. Number 74 retains the upper storey walling displaying exposed studwork and a crenellated bressumer, but the jetty was reconstructed in the 19th century using red brick, now plastered. Number 74 has a plaintiled roof, while Numbers 76 and 78 have concrete tiles. Various 20th-century casement windows and entrance doors are present. Inside Number 78, the original parlour contains fine multiple-roll moulded main beams and joists. In Number 76, the original hall features a blocked doorway with an arched head that once led to the service end of the building, now incorporated into Number 74. An upper floor room within Number 1, Raven’s Lane, is structurally part of Number 78, The Street, and is included in the listing. Various 19th-century rear extensions have been added to the property.
