Description

The Cock Inn is a public house located on The Street in Bramford. Its core likely dates back to the 16th century, with significant alterations made during several periods. The building is one storey high with attics and features a timber-framed and plastered structure, which has largely been underbuilt and encased in late 18th or early 19th century brickwork that is now painted. The roof is covered with plain tiles and includes gabled dormers from the 19th century that have casement windows. There is a central chimney made of red brick from the 19th century.

The windows are 3-light casements from the 18th or early 19th century, equipped with transoms and hinged boarded shutters. The entrance door is boarded and dates from the 19th century. The right-hand section of the building has an altered 16th-century core, with a closed truss that is visible within the bar and features tension-bracing, indicating it was originally external. An open truss with an arch-braced tie-beam, now seen in a first-floor partition, may represent the central truss of an open hall. In the 17th or early 18th century, an upper floor was added, along with another cell that includes an axial chimney on the left side. Smoke-encrusted rafters from the open hall roof have been reused in the 17th or 18th-century rebuilding. Additionally, a lean-to extension was added to the front right in the 19th century, likely serving as a butcher's shop.
