Description

The Church of St Augustine is a parish church located on Haughley Road, dating back to the medieval period with restoration work completed in 1860. The structure features a nave and chancel built from flint rubble with freestone quoins, topped by a thatched roof. At the east end, there is a parapet gable, and at the west end, a timber bellcote with a shingled pyramid roof, both added in 1860.

Originally a small Norman church, it shows signs of an apsidal east end before the chancel was extended in the 13th century. The south doorway, dating from the 11th or 12th century, is plain and has chamfered imposts, while the north doorway, which was similar, has been blocked. A pointed lancet window in the north wall dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. The chancel features a 13th-century window with a double splay and a trefoil-headed window from around 1300, which has a pair of squinch arches over the sedilia, along with a trefoil-headed piscina. Other windows in the east and south walls were added in the 19th century, and the west wall was likely rebuilt in 1860.

Inside, the nave and chancel have a canted and plastered continuous roof that appears medieval but may have been renewed in the 19th century, featuring two encased medieval tiebeams. Notably, there is an unusually early rood screen from around 1330-1350, characterized by turned baluster shafts and ogee-headed lights with dagger tracery. The limestone font, possibly from around 1300, is octagonal with broach stops alternating with sunk cusping, though the bowl was renewed in the 19th century.
