Description

Haughley Bushes is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from around 1700, with a core that dates back to about 1560. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring four windows. It is timber-framed and plastered, with the ground storey walling along the front elevation made of painted red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has two axial chimneys made of red brick from around 1700. There are four gabled dormers, also from around 1700, and the windows have original wrought iron casements that were formerly fitted with leaded glazing. The ground storey has 18th-century three-light casements with segmental heads and transoms. The entrance doorway, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, features a six-panelled door with glazed upper panels and a flat canopy supported by fretted brackets. Inside, the hall showcases a fully exposed ceiling with heavy, richly moulded joists from about 1560, featuring roll and scotia mouldings and main beams with ogee profiles. The front wall may have originally jutted out at this section. Some of the framing at the center of the house likely dates from the 16th century, but there have been remodelling and reconstruction efforts that included extensions to both the right and left in plain but substantial late 17th-century carpentry. The roof structure consists of a two-tier butt-purlin design.
