Description
Chain House is a farmhouse, likely dating from the 16th century, with alterations made around 1800 and in the 19th century. The building has two storeys and features seven windows. It is constructed with timber framing and plastered panels, displaying 19th-century cable-pattern pargetting. The roof is plaintiled and includes a central chimney from the 19th century, while a large 17th-century red brick chimney at the rear has a distinctive diaper pattern made with burnt headers and linked square shafts. The windows are small-pane sashes from around 1800, complete with moulded architraves. The entrance features an impressive doorway with a six-panelled door, where the central panels are small and under-square, along with panelled reveals, a moulded architrave, and a shallow cornice supported by console brackets. Inside, one room showcases well-crafted moulded ceiling joists from the 16th century. The building has three rear wings of varying dates, all encased in early 20th-century brick, including a long service wing at the north end that interlocks with the rear of No. 3, High Street.
