Description

Church Cottage is a house dating from the late 14th century or 15th century, with remodelling from the 16th century and later. It features a two-storey cross-wing, with the main range that once extended to the left along the street. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with the front gable rebuilt in 19th century brick, which is now painted. It has a concrete plaintiled roof.

An axial chimney from the late 16th century or early 17th century is made of pink and buff brick, with the shaft rebuilt in mid-20th century red brick. The front includes a mid-19th century square bay shop window with small panes, which is connected to a flat canopy over the entrance door supported by carved console brackets. The entrance features a 19th century half-glazed four-panelled door.

The front two or three bays of the house are the oldest, showcasing heavy studding, jowled storey posts, and cambered tie-beams with evidence of short archbraces. The house was extended to the rear beyond the chimney in the 15th century or early 16th century, displaying heavy close-studding, blocked diamond mullioned windows, and a coupled-rafter roof, although the front section of the roof was not examined. A further rearward extension, possibly from the 16th century, tapers to an exceptionally narrow span. The first floor structure and part of the walling at the front were altered in the 17th century.
