Description
The Firs is a house dating from the late 14th century or early 15th century, with a rearward extension built around 1600. It features a two-bay service crosswing and stands two storeys high. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. The windows are 19th-century small-pane casements, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 17th or 18th century on the east side. Inside, the framing is largely exposed, showing evidence of a jettied upper floor facing north, although the entire gable was rebuilt in the 17th or 18th century with primary-braced studding. The original studding is widely spaced. There is a blocked two-centred arched doorway leading to a service room and blocked diamond mullioned windows. An open truss features a cambered tie-beam and square-sectioned slightly curved archbraces, but the roof is inaccessible. The single-bay extension at the rear has arch studbraced walling and retains an original attic, likely from around 1600. The house was once connected to an open hall that stood to its right.
