Description
Gables Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th century and early 17th century, built in several phases. It features a timber frame with plaster and a roof made of glazed black pantiles. The building has two storeys and consists of a main range with cross-wings on either side, the smaller cross-wing to the east being the oldest part. To the north of the central range, there is a disused 17th-century porch with a jettied upper floor, and to the south, there is a later 17th-century gabled addition. The windows are mostly late 19th-century and 20th-century casements with large panes.
To the southwest of the central range, there is a red brick porch dated 1875, which features a four-panelled door with a two-centre arched head. To the north, there is a 19th-century six-panelled raised and fielded door. Above these doorways is a rectangular axial stack. Inside, much of the structure has been exposed, revealing interesting features. In the west wing, where the timbers are concealed, there are arched brick fireplaces on both floors. The east wing, possibly from the early 16th century, has a former open truss with an arched-braced cambered tie beam that once supported a queen-post roof, along with some notable framing that includes reversed bracing and two diamond-mullioned windows.
