Description

Highfield Lodge is a house built in 1870. It was designed by J.R. Cattermole for Noah Hunt, with S. Turner acting as the builder. The house is constructed of red brick with a machine tile roof. The plan consists of two parallel gabled ranges running north-south, connected at the south end by a gabled range running east-west.

The eastern facade has a wide gable end to the left, containing a doorway set within a moulded four-centred recessed arch. To the right of this are two single-pane horned sash windows, with a further single-pane horned sash window above, set under a hipped roof. A small single-pane horned sash window is located in the gable head. To the right of the gable end is a canted bay with double-glazed doors. Two single-pane horned sash windows are positioned above, without glazing bars. The roofs are gabled, with three irregularly positioned serrated stacks. The western front features a collection of single-pane horned sash windows, a two-storey canted bay window to the left (rebuilt after collapse in 1987), and a bay window to the right at ground floor. Two gabled dormers are present; one is small, and the other is larger, featuring decorative brick corbelling running down through the eaves. The south front includes a two-storey canted bay window to the left and a contemporary greenhouse to the right. The greenhouse is constructed of timber and plate glass.

The interior is inspired by Gothic design, featuring a wide four-centred arch over the staircase. The staircase is of open-string construction with square chamfered balusters and a moulded handrail, and has a raked dado with arched panelling. Internal doors have six moulded panels. Some windows include balanced rising shutters.
