Description
No. 35 Wherstead Road is a house that has been converted into a shop with storage above. It dates from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries, and a rear extension added in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed and has a roof covered with concrete corrugated tiles. It is two storeys high, featuring a late 20th-century plate-glass shop front. Above this, the gable, which runs parallel to the street, is plastered, colourwashed, and has one late 20th-century imitation sash window. The gabled roof at the back is set at right angles to the street.
Inside, the front room has a boxed beam, while the rear room reveals exposed timber-framing, including a blocked doorway and window in the south wall. The cellar contains brickwork from the mid-16th and 17th centuries. An inserted staircase is situated between the two ground-floor rooms. The front first-floor room has a blocked three-light diamond-mullioned window. The crown-post roof, designed in the mid-16th century, features square posts with solid arched braces supporting the crown purlin and collars, along with cambered tie beams.
