Description
The premises occupied by National Westminster Bank is a stucco fronted building constructed in 1901, designed in a free gothic style that echoes early Gothic Revival architecture. It is located at the corner of King Street and Princes Street and features a high panelled parapet adorned with quatrefoil panels and tall pointed "gothic" gables above the attic dormers. The building has a five-window range overall, with two-storey, three-light oriel bay windows at the corner and the south end. The windows are double-hung sashes without glazing bars, set in openings framed by slender "gothic" pillars. Wide panelled bands run between the storeys, with pargetted panels positioned above the windows. The ground storey boasts large three-light mullioned and transomed windows, along with a splayed corner that features an ogee arch. The parapet above the corner oriel bay is castellated and topped with a dome that is surmounted by a cupola with a spire and pinnacles. National Westminster Bank is part of a group with the Swan Inn and the Corn Exchange on King Street.
