Description
The Post Office is a late 19th-century building featuring a stone front and grey gault brick at the rear. Designed in an Italianate palazzo style, it has splayed corners and a parapet adorned with a modillion cornice. A prominent central feature rises above the parapet, displaying a Royal coat of arms flanked by female figures. The facade includes end bays marked by pairs of arched pavilions that extend above an ornamental parapet. The building has two storeys and a lower ground storey on Princes Street, which serves as an ashlar base.
The front has a five-window range, with one window on each splayed corner and an eight-window range on Princes Street, featuring double-hung sash windows without glazing bars. The first-storey windows are set within semi-circular recessed arches that have keystones with human heads, positioned between paired Ionic pilasters. On the ground storey, a Roman Doric portico projects from the front, supported by paired columns on pedestals, with a modillion cornice and a low parapet featuring female figures symbolizing Industry, Electricity, Steam, and Commerce. Access is provided by a flight of stone steps.
The first-storey windows on Princes Street have architraves and cornices, with a pediment rising above the three southernmost windows. Ground storey windows are framed by rusticated pilasters and feature enriched architraves, aprons, and keystones with human heads. At the southern end, there are paired doorways topped with pediments.
The Post Office is part of a group that includes Nos 7, 8, 13, and 15, the Golden Lion Hotel, and the Town Hall.
