Description
9 and 11 Butter Market is a late 19th-century red brick building consisting of two tenements. Number 9 features a Dutch gable adorned with scrolls and three orders of pilasters. A large five-light bay with rounded corners is positioned between the first and second storeys, topped with a modillion cornice and a balustrade. A richly ornamented band of moulded plaster runs along the bay between the storeys, and the mullions of the bay are also decorated with moulded plasterwork. The third storey has three semi-circular headed windows above the bay, while the ground storey contains a 20th-century shop. Number 11 has a two-storey front with a parapet and pilasters on the first storey, featuring a central five-light two-storey bay that mirrors the design of Number 9, complete with modillion cornices and richly ornamented moulded plaster friezes. This bay extends to an attic storey, and the ground storey also includes a 20th-century shop.
