Description
No 13 Cornhill is a red brick and stone building designed by the Ipswich architect F G Cotman in 1889, showcasing a free Jacobean style. This structure is a notable example of late Victorian commercial architecture and, along with the Town Hall and Post Office on the south side of Cornhill, contributes to an interesting group of late 19th-century civic buildings. The building has three storeys and attics. Its windows are double-hung sashes without glazing bars, featuring round-headed arches with ornamental hood moulds. There are two stone oriel bay windows: one at the west end on the second storey and another that rises through the first and second storeys. Some windows have stone orders, and there is an arcaded window range on the second storey. The west end is topped with a balustraded parapet. The dormer windows are designed with "Dutch" gables, adorned with ornamental stone scroll work and pinnacles. In 1930, the ground storey was altered to create Lloyds Avenue, which includes a Tuscan arcade with a modillion cornice, a wide central traffic opening, and flanking semi-circular arched pedestrian openings with engaged columns. The first storey windows above this opening are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in stone architraves. The roof is tiled. Nos 7, 8, 13, and 15, along with the Golden Lion Hotel, Town Hall, and Post Office, form a cohesive group.
