Description
The Arcade is an early 19th-century archway located on Arcade Street, connecting to King Street. The structure is stuccoed and features a central element with pilasters, a frieze, a cornice topped by a balustrade, and a central elliptical archway with a moulded stucco architrave. Plain Ionic columns are set into the corners of the archway. On either side of the central feature are two-storey stuccoed wings, each with two windows. The windows include some double-hung sashes with glazing bars and some 20th-century casements. The ground floor has a three-light double-hung sash window on the north end and a 20th-century shop front on the south end. Inside the archway, there is a plastered elliptical barrel vault divided into three sections. At the rear, facing Arcade Street, the flanking wings have pediments, with one featuring a Diocletian window. The south end has a tall window made up of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. Nos 1 and 2 form a group with the Corn Exchange and the Swan Inn on King Street.
