Description
The barn to the east of South Elmham Hall is a 16th-century structure that is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a corrugated iron roof. It has a frame consisting of five bays with substantial studding and no middle rail, featuring arched braces that are halved against the outside of the studs. There is one original double door entry located on the north side. The barn's trusses have straight tie-beams, supported by long arched braces. The roof is notable for its unusual queen-post design, with queen-posts of oblong section that lack jowls, morticed into the soffits of the arcade plates. The collar above is straight and narrow with chamfered edges, and is birds-mouth-jointed over the arcade plates. Arched braces connect the queen-posts to the arcade plates, and there are arched tension braces from the queen-posts to the tie beams. Additionally, a full-height porch from the late 17th century has been added to the rear of the barn, featuring primary braces and a roof supported by one row of slightly stepped butt purlins, which are pared off at the ends.
