Description

This is a house comprising two distinct blocks, located on London Road in Pakefield, Lowestoft. The south block dates to the 17th century and was altered subsequently, while the larger north block was built in 1707. The house is constructed of whitewashed brick in a random Flemish bond, with pantiled roofs.

The south block is low and two-storey, and features two 20th-century casement windows on the east side of the ground floor, and three similar windows on the first floor, added in the 20th century. A prominent wall plate sits just below the gabled roof, and the south gable has brick kneelers. An internal gable-end stack is present on the south side. A conservatory was added to the rear in 1988, and two late 20th-century casements were inserted under the eaves. The interior of this section shows a stud south gable wall and a roof structure of principals, collars, and a single tier of purlins.

The north block follows a lobby-entrance plan. The east front features a central 20th-century panelled door flanked by 3-light 20th-century casements on either side. A platband runs along the first floor, and the date "1707" is incorporated into the tie-irons. First floor windows consist of one 2-light and one 3-light 20th-century casement. A gabled roof tops the block, with a ridge stack positioned over the entrance door and a reduced internal gable-end stack to the north. A sloping extension to the rear, built in 1950, houses the staircase. The interior of the main block contains two principal ground-floor rooms, each entered through plank doors with strap hinges. The north room's fireplace has chamfered jambs and a bressumer. The south room also features a chamfered bressumer to its fireplace, and above it a 17th-century pargetted frieze is decorated with a continuous vine trail and gadrooned borders. Two former winder staircases were replaced in 1950 by a straight flight located in an outshut to the rear. A first-floor corridor has been inserted along the west side of the rooms.
