Description
Staithe House is a building that dates from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, with some late 19th century additions. It has two storeys and an attic. The front facing the road features three windows from the earlier part of the building and two from the later addition, all made of red brick. The wood cornice includes ogee brackets and a bed mould. The main entrance is located on the north side, and the front has one gable with earlier window openings that have rusticated brick jambs and rusticated brick quoins. The windows feature segmental brick drip moulds and late 18th century sash windows in flush frames that do not fit exactly into the earlier openings. The rear section of the house has a brick dated 1766. The central portion is from the 17th century, but there are signs of a 16th century origin both inside and outside. The entrance door has six panels and a wood case. Most windows are sash with wood frames and flat arches. Inside, there is a fine oak staircase with concave twist balusters and a good Adam type mantel in a panelled room, which features a carved harvest scene depicting children carrying sheaves to a seated female figure holding a sickle.
