Description
Ravensmere House is a 17th-century building, dated by wrought iron wall ties in the gable to 1694. Initials BAS are also found in wrought iron on the opposite gable, although the letter B is now missing. The house has two storeys and an attic, featuring two dormers and gable end windows. It has a plinth and a brick band made with moulded bricks, along with Dutch gables. The brick chimneys have moulded capping and bases, with detached flues that are square in plan. A wood cornice with shaped brackets adorns the exterior, which is covered with pantiles. There are five sash windows with flush frames and flat arches. The entrance includes a six-panel door set in a wooden case, flanked by fluted Doric pilasters, with panelled reveals, triglyphs, and pediments.
Inside, the condition is generally good, featuring one panelled room. The oak stair has heavy turned balusters and a built-up moulded oak handrail, with a chequer brick design that includes dark header ends. The building is situated in the Old Market, which contributes to the overall character of the area and is located near the centre of the town.
