Description
St Mary's House, now converted into flats, is an early 19th-century building located on Ballygate. It is two storeys tall and constructed of Suffolk yellow brick, featuring a wood modillion cornice and slate roofing. The building has a plinth and five sash windows with glazing bars and flat arches. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a patterned fanlight, set in a wooden case with panelled reveals that extend under an arch, supported by Doric three-quarter columns and a modillion entablature.
Historically, St Mary's House was occupied by a series of headmasters from a school established by Dr. Henry Falconbridge, whose will dated 1712 became effective in 1770 after the death of intervening beneficiaries. Dr. Falconbridge designated St Mary's for use as a school, which operated in various buildings, including the Town Hall. In the 20th century, the extensive stabling associated with the house was converted into schoolrooms. A modern tablet displaying the Falconbridge coat of arms and inscribed with "HF17 1712" was installed to commemorate the school's origins.
